In the beginnings of World War II, Germany was still suffering economically from World War I. They had no money, no leader and no stable government. German people had no hope or belief in their country anymore. Then, an influential politician, Adolf Hitler, became the chancellor of Germany and obtained a massive amount of power. Similarly, in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of English boys are stranded on an island without any civilization or adult supervision. Throughout the story, they slowly become savages with no control over their inner animalistic instincts through the encouragement of one of the boys, Jack. In both situations, there is a lack of proper government until a leader arises who takes on a mass amount of power which leads to the worst possible form of government.

A theme in Lord of the Flies is that humans nature has savage instincts. William Golding shows this throughout the story when the boys turn completely savage at the end of the book. Jack, as their leader, institutionalized this savage standard. For instance, he breaks away from Ralph and convinces boys to come with him, “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too.” The power given to him by being the leader allows him to influence the other boys into savagery. Jack is also supposed to resemble a Hitler-like figure. So, obviously in World War II Hitler was a corrupt leader. Such as, he forced specific groups of people into small spaces of large cities to live in. They were crammed in 12-15 people a room, just because Hitler and his followers targeted them.
