When he was at his dorm room his other roommates came in, the one telling him about his date tonight with Jane Gallagher, a friend of Holden. The roommate talks Holden into doing a homework assignment for him while he’s out. He writes about his deceased brother’s baseball glove, and the poetry written on it. The roommate was upset at the work because it didn't match the assignment and they get in a fight.

He decides he doesn't want to have sex with her, only pays her half the money and kicks her out of his hotel room. SHe and the elevator operator comes back and he beats Holden up for not having sex with her and takes more money.
He goes on a date with a friend, Sally. They go to a play, where he hates all the actors, and rants to her about his school and all the phonies. He insists they run away together and live together in a tiny cabin, that they would be happy. At the end of the conversation he insults her and then leaves.
He sneaks into his parents house to see his sister Phoebe. She asks him what he wants to do with his life. He says he wants to be a catcher in the rye, and stand at the edge of a cliff to catch children when they are close to falling off. His desire is to keep them safe.
She lends him money, and he stays with a teacher for the night. He gets weirded out and leaves. He meets Phoebe for lunch the next day to return the money to her, and tells her he's planning to go west. She begs him to stay, and says if he goes, he's going with him. He tries to tell her no, that she needs to stay in school, and they end up going to the
