The way of life in the 1990’s are very different to the life in the Pleasantville. Despite it being a fictional world, Pleasantville is a great example of the visualization of the expectations of society in the 1950’s for an ideal world. The 1950’s were the start of the peace of its citizens and between countries; the start of technological advancement progress through new innovations that prioritized entertainment and lifestyle; notable technological advancement; the domination of music and fashion; and economic boom and political dominance. The 1990’s showed an exceptional change in society, therefore, it gives more standards of society to its people. There is a large gap between the standards in Pleasantville and the 1990’s. In Pleasantville, it showed how people interact according to their roles as men and women. The film emphasizes the importance of gender roles in the Pleasantville where the breadwinner and disciplinarian of the house must be the husband while women should assist her husband and children, and cook dinner and welcome her husband whenever he comes home. As a perfect world in the 1950’s, parents come home early before dinner, nationalism was strong, and women must act in a ‘ladylike’ manner. On the contrary, people in the 1990’s have more freedom to everyone’s expression and choice where women wore jeans and men wore informal outfits. In the 1990’s, there is more competition in getting jobs due to the decreasing number of works. As a popular cause of death, there are awareness for the use of cars due to its high death toll. In the Pleasantville, to show the perfect world for the people of 1950’s, women must show support and appreciation towards their husband and children; and to obey their husband’s commands. Because of this, women were submissive and powerless to men. The relationship between the parent and children showed the perfect family. Termed as the perfect place to live, Pleasantville is where children respect their parents in terms of talking and interacting inside and outside their house. In addition, parents were more responsible in prioritizing their children’s hobbies, and men value the advice of asking their crush’s siblings permission first before asking for a date. However, it is different from the 1990’, people are more vulgar in their relationship. There are times where children often disrespect their parents, weak bond between parents and their children, acceptance of divorce in society, flirting is less conservative, and women in the 1990’s make the first move to talk to
