Fungui and Jiazhen suffered many losses. Such as, the loss of their wealth and most importantly—their children. Similarly to Fungui and Jiazhen, people have dealt with the deaths of family members and friends from war, industrial accidents, or illness. During the Great Leap Forward, China was focused on surpassing the United States and industrializing. As a result, everyone was melting metal —even children! Logically, this would lead to many injuries and deaths, such as Youqing's. Similarly, the Cultural Revolution was a time for change and communism; it was the rise of the Red Guards. Chairman Mao's Red Guards were teenagers who protected Mao and his leadership. They captured and killed teachers, doctors, professor, or anyone the seemed to be "anti-revoluntionaries". Often times, they took their positions. In the movie, the Red Guards took the positions of doctors and nurses, who they captured and jailed. Due to their lack of medical knowledge, Fengxia bleeds to death after giving birth to Little Bun. It is eye opening how people could be so focused on their country and leader that they were willing to put themselves and loved ones in danger. Despite the challenges and conflicts life threw at them, Fungui and Jiazhen are able to stay determined and positive.
