The only similarity I observed through viewing Michael’s interview and reading Bernardo’s is that they are a year apart in age, and I’m assuming they’re both physically fit since they are involved in sports, and these young men attend school. However, I found many differences between the two. Michael seemed very shy and timid and lived a more sheltered lifestyle his only worry is that he doesn’t forget to do his homework, and his only responsibilities are to throw out the trash, watch his siblings and feed himself. And when he is questioned about his typical day, he replies with a few word answers. On a cognitive and emotional level, he seems to be a lot less mature than Bernardo.…

Felix who is a very vulnerable child, makes the readers realise that they cannot trust Felix to give them the actual story. When it was very obvious to the reader that the soldier was trying to kill him, to Felix it was just an ‘accident.’ Even though Felix is telling the story how he thinks it to be, Gleitzman wrote the book in such a way to make the readers realise that this is not what’s actually going on.
