Graduating high school is a big accomplishment, but it is only the beginning of a student starting their own life and being independent from their parents. For most people, the next step after high school is college, and college has many differences from high school. When applying to college, the main factors prospective students, look at are required test scores, the necessary grade point averages, and tuition costs. Lately the number of gun threats and violence has rapidly increased, with one of the many locations for these types of crimes are on large college campuses. College campuses with over 10,000 students have around 6,712 on campus burglaries a year (College Crime). Many students do not realize the importance of keeping their items safe while in school because they are so used to all their items being secured in their house. Where in college that is not the case, students are in dorms with hundreds of people and do not know everyone that well so there is possibility for personal items to be stolen. Ways to keep the expensive or valuable items you take to college safe are try and personalize everything to the best of your ability, for example alway have your name or number on things so it would be more difficult for someone to claim as their own. Another way to ensure your items are safe is to always lock them whether it is the dorm room, a bike or electronic devices, it is always smart to lock them so they are difficult to take. An addition to theft the second largest type of campus crime is sexual assaults. In 2012 alone there was over 3,900 cases of forcible sex offenses on campuses (Anderson). The University of Michigan- Ann Arbor averages 34 sexual assaults a year making them the nation 's second highest college campus with the most sexual assaults (Anderson). The University of Virginia has 14,928 full time students and averages 15 sexual assaults and 27 rapes on campus a year (College Factual) , yet the university recently was involved with a highly profiled sexual assault scandal.
