Good Vs. Evil In Beowulf

The story of beowulf was originally only about the fight and difference between good and evil, as well as the stages of common life. But to keep the same basic story interesting for a modern viewing audience, Hollywood had to make some changes. Weather the changes too dramatically changed the story is debatable, but they both have the same main idea. The story of Beowulf was changed in the animated version to better fit the more complex interests of modern society including all good as some evil and all evil has some good, as well as how the absence of fathers in a child's life can have a strong negative effect on them. One of the moral ideas portrayed in the movie is the idea of the “yin yang”. The idea is that all good is not completely good, and all evil is not completely evil. According to some studies, this dramatically increases the difficulty of the child's life and can increase their chance to make poor life decisions. This is apparent in the movie in multiple situations. In the movie it is implied that Hrothgar had slept with grendel's mother and that Hrothgar is grendel's father. Hrothgar did not stay with Grendel and his mother however leaving Grendel with the absence of a father. Hrothgar is “cursed” for the rest of his life for having to deal with his evil son constantly bringing ruin and death to his kingdom. The same situation happens once again to Beowulf. Instead of defeating Grendel's mother, Beowulf is enticed by her beauty and gives her a child. He then leaves, never coming back to see her or his son. Several year later, his son comes back as a dragon and attacks his kingdom. The movie is clearly trying to portray the damage that is done to someone's life when they don't have a father present.
