The death penalty has always been a controversial subject. Its first recorded American incident was in 1608. George Kendall was executed because he was accused of plotting to betray the British. And it has been used in prisons for years after. The first legal execution was in 1622, and Daniel Frank was hung for theft. Most people would find that a bit extreme but people of that time found that appropriate. Just like today a lot of people find the death penalty too extreme or totally acceptable.
But recently over the years American support for the death penalty has declined. Its support percentage has dropped from 62% to 56% since 2011. In 1996 it was at 78% supported and 18% opposed. But today it’s at its lowest at 56% support
