Texting and Driving It’s hard to believe that texting and driving is one of the highest cause of deaths within teenagers. Technology is all around us everyday, and in some ways is a very good thing, but in others, it can be very bad. Technology can benefit us in many ways, but some teenagers are taking advantage of this. This does not only affect teenagers, but everyone who believes that a text message is worth more than their life. People are putting themselves and other people in danger when they pull out their phone while behind the wheel. “Currently, 44 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands make it illegal to text and drive.” (Wallace) Some of the penalties of texting while driving include; hefty fines, licence suspension, raised insurance rates, and even prison time. “You think your auto insurance premium is too expensive now? Just wait until your insurance company finds out that you have received a citation for texting and driving!” (10 Pragmatic Reasons) There are so many cons to texting and driving that it is simply not worth it. Text messages can wait. No text message is worth texting back and putting everyone in danger. If it is urgent then pull over and respond. People need to understand what environment they put everyone else in when they are on their phone while behind the wheel. Not only are people putting themselves in danger but they are also putting everyone they are around in danger. If parents could monitor when their kids are texting and driving they could restrict their phones when they are driving. Or, the more simple way, is to just download an app that detects when you are driving and won’t let a text be delivered until you are stopped somewhere or get to the destination. By downloading an app this takes away the chance of a text coming through and causing you to take eyes off the road. Some examples of these apps are Cellcontrol and Drive Safe Mode. There are apps that even offer rewards for not texting and driving by earning points you can redeem at participating stores.
