What Is The Cultural Diversity Issue

Decent Essays
The cultural diversity issue is discrimination against the LGBT community. The aspect of culture that involved is value orientation and social interaction patterns. The article was about a governor in South Dakota considering transgender restroom bill. The bill would restrict the use of school restrooms and locker rooms meaning transgender students would have to use the restroom of the sex they're born with. THe transgender students would be provided with a reasonable accommodation such as a unisex restroom.
After reading the article I feel that most people in the LGBT community already have a fear of coming out why make it even worse. Also, i feel this would complicate issues in school such as additional judgement. I feel this bill shouldn't

An article was written by Michael J. Broyde, published by CNN, and titled “Transgender Bathroom Issue: A Solution?”, gives a synopsis of the issue of letting people go into the bathroom of their identified gender, rather than just their birth gender. The article opens by just explaining how that this topic got into the limelight when the supreme court took up a case of a high school student trying to use a boy’s bathroom, and whether or not that should be allowed (Broyde). Broyde then goes on to explain that in many religions, including his own, using the bathroom is seen as an extreme private time and shouldn’t be shared with anyone regardless of gender. Culture is the communicative process and way of life for groups of people, which inform different beliefs, values, and behaviors. All opinions, and thus the differing points of view on this topic, are influenced by culture. Therefore, in this situation there are multiple cultures functioning and working in regards to both the issue itself and the accounts of the issue. For one, people who identify as transgender are apart of a culture and community that no one outside can truly understand, including people in the media writing and reporting on the controversy. Moreover, it is notable that North Carolina has a southern cultural mentality, which is significant because southern culture typically emphasizes traditional values.…

Ruth Macklin believes that the cultural diversity we have in America creates problems for both physicians and patients. I consider the abundance of cultural diversity to be a challenge, and the physicians and patients need to both learn to clearly communicate their stances and reach a solution. As physicians, it is their duty to listen to the patient and demonstrate sensitivity to their situation, a different background should not step in the way of that. There are many cases of multiculturism being present in healthcare that have solutions. I will be discussing how Voodoo, Judaism, Female Genital Mutilation and the Santeria’s practices with mercury are all apart of multiculturism, the difficulties they pose in today’s society, and Ruth Macklin’s perspective on how we can go about handling these challenges.…

Cultural Competency Assignment: The LGBT Culture Throughout its history, the United States has symbolized equality of opportunity for people of all races, origins, religions, and creeds. Despite these founding principles of equality and acceptance, the United States has also had a long history of denying basic rights to certain groups of people that live within the land. Still, most Americans describe our culture as the “melting pot” in which people from around the world contribute their own values, attitudes, and beliefs. In behavioral healthcare professions, it is important to understand how these unique qualities between persons influence personal autonomy, well-being, and self-determination. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)…

Tokenism occurs when a person includes a minority character for the simple sake of having a minority character. It is best to avoid this as it gives a connotation of requirement and can feel forced. Tokenism occurs in a childcare setting when cultural diversity is not acknowledged properly in the program such as showing diversity using stereotypical images and materials that misrepresent a culture or one off cultural experiences. These one off experiences can enhance learning about cultural diversity, but on their own, they are not a substitute for acknowledging diversity and differences. Tokenistic representation reduces the importance and significance of the contributions and roles of a minority group.…

While ‘Religious Freedom’ laws give the right to public business owners and officials to refuse service to those who they believe ‘violate their religious beliefs.’ The Obama administration is trying to make schools allow their transgender students to use the school facilities based off of the gender they identify as. Under recent heat, a federal judge had put a temporary block on Obama’s say in the matter meant to provide and expansion of Bathroom access for transgender students. Many believe the policy infringed upon student policy and states’ rights.…

    A. When we integrate an understanding of different cultures into our services delivery and practices we are identifying actions to reduce barriers. We are showing our children in our care that we see their cultural differences and we all share something unique about our lively hoods. When we promote different cultural diversity within our settings we are allowing children to be free and confident about who they are and where they come from and help them to build connections between home and early childhood settings or school (programming & planning, chpt 2, pg 37). By making our settings this way we ensure that all children feel a sense of belonging. Therefore children start to mimic the settings they are surrounded by and start to become aware of the differences they each have and respect others cultural diversity.…

Through all of our readings and discussions from this class, we have studied many issues related to diversity. Diversity plays a major role in our culture today; however, discrimination based on race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and gender has been apart of America’s history since the beginning. This class taught me a lot about discrimination because of diversity, and I want to focus on specifically on racial issues. In this essay, I will review several excerpts from this class concerning issues that have arisen from racial discrimination, both from America’s history and present. The first excerpt we read regarding racial issues discussed immigration to America in the late 1800’s.…

For my cultural diversity class we were asked to choose and write about a movie I have watched and express what its diversity issue was in the movie or what value issues were noticed. I chose the movie, “Twelve Years a Slave.” This was the first movie to be directed, produced, and written by African Americans to win an academy award. This is a movie that has won 235 awards worldwide, and was also a winner of the Oscar award for the best motion picture prize. This movie is based on an African American man named Solomon Northup who was born, married, worked, and lived in upstate New York as a free man.…

As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. When interviewing John Killingbeck, a twenty-year-old student at SIUe, I learned that he has background that surprised and interested me immediately. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…

I will admit that my mindset is not always the most open on certain issues, but I will say that I am a proponent of freedom. I may ever need to get an abortion, but I respect the right of a person to get one; I may never be a homosexual man, but I do not give a damn, frankly, if they want to be able to get married and be miserable like the rest of us (I kid, I kid); And I may never be transgender, but I do not care where they use the restroom, or if a female who identifies as male uses the mens room (the article specifies how the issue only seems to care about transgender men using the rest room, so this is my counter perspective), it probably is just going to…
