Method In order to obtain the data needed for this study, a thirty question survey will be distributed to middle school children at their home school in different zip codes located within the Phoenix metropolitan area. The schools that are hypothesized to have the biggest correlation between alcohol, tobacco, and other substance, delinquency to lower academic achievement and higher juvenile delinquency will come from the Maryvale area. The study will show how Maryvale area schools will have lower academic achievement and higher substance use compared to other schools in other areas within the Phoenix metropolitan area. Given the fact that the study is trying to find the correlation between underage drug use and juvenile delinquency the Pearson-R will be used. The study’s goal is to confirm that low academic achievement is a direct contributor to underage use and juvenile delinquency. Two areas will be measured, R will represent the academic achievement, X represents underage use, and Y represents juvenile delinquency. The study will try to confirm that underage use and juvenile delinquency is directly related to academic achievement. These gaps need further evaluation to not only understand the causes, but how to find a solution for the problem at hand. Some of the areas in which further evaluation is needed include how protective factors help deter youth from engaging in risky behaviors. It would be also important to study and follow youth who are exposed to different preventive programs and how these program make a difference in both short term and long term. It is good to consider a long term study in which students are followed to keep track after their initial contact until early adulthood. In the instances where school even within the Maryvale area that did not displayed lowered academic achievement, it would be good to study their curriculum compared to schools in the surrounding area to single out the protective factors and try to replicate them. Lastly, it would be beneficial to also run a qualitative study on parental involvement in the youth’s lives that also reflect the differences within different demographic characteristics and family structure. For this reason, results from the current study need to carefully be taken in to consideration and assess for significant information in order to be generalized and help understand the undermining substance use and delinquent views and behaviors have in academic achievement in other metropolitan
