What Is The Community Like A Dystopia

Improved Essays
In The Giver, the author has portrayed the community to be more like a dystopian world than a utopia. Dystopias are the exact opposite of utopias, the perfect paradise. The Giver society is always being watched, everyone looks the same, and the citizens of the community are living in an illusion of a perfect world. A dystopian society is always under close watch by the people in power. In the community of The Giver, the main character, Jonas, gets called out for a mistake he had made as soon as it happened. On page twenty-three, it states the Jonas had taken home an apple and the announcement, “This is a reminder to mle elevens that objects are not to be removed from the Recreation Area and that snacks are to be eaten, not to be hoarded,”

Dystopias are commonly referred to as an imagined place in which everything is unpleasant. There are different ways for a society to become a dystopia, which is the antonym of a utopia or imagined community/society that possesses highly desireable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens; there are also many ways for films, literature, and other arts to allow us to experience these so called dystopian societies. Animal Farm,by George Orwell, is a typical anti-utopia because the animals of the book overrun the humans to form a “perfect world” yet their plight results in a society worse than the one they tried to escape. Interstellar, although also a dystopian society example, is not the average dystopia in the sense that the environment…

A dystopian is the opposite of a utopia. A utopia is a perfect society where everyone has everything they need, everyone gets along, everyone is happy, and basically life is perfect. A dystopia is the exact opposite of that. People don’t have things they need, people are poor, not happy, not everyone is happy, people are dehumanized, and overall it’s a terrible society to live in. The dystopian world in Ready Player One is comparable to the Holocaust, because they both were dystopias, people were dehumanized, and people forgot what life was.…

The society in the popular utopian/dystopian book, The Giver, may seem the better alternative of our modern day society, the dream land that everyone wishes we could achieve, but when we compare how each society functions, maybe this so called ¨perfect world¨ isn't as perfect as we would have hoped it to be. Modern day society and The Giver have may have some similarities, but when the two societies are compared to rules, family, and figurehead/leadership, it seems these two societies are worlds apart. Maybe, we have it better in our society than we originally thought. For instance, when rules come into play, it seems that modern day society has free range.…
