Underlying this issue as well as others is the Conflict Theory, one of the few traditions highlighted by Randall Collins in his book, Four Sociological Traditions. In a world full of different people and different things, how can we still seem to be connected? Dr. Chitra Divakaruni, author of One Amazing Thing, was able to express this to every incoming first year student at Appalachian State University. During the short time Dr. Divakaruni was on stage, she discussed many different things, from the book that she wrote for all incoming Appalachian State students, to the times that that she has experienced conflict in her life. Dr. Divakaruni’s speech connects to the course ‘Conflict and Peace’ because she discussed Hurricane Katrina, she gave details about a lady she came in contact with that had been abused in some way, and her book that she wrote is nothing shy of a being strictly about conflict and resolution. Conflict is a complex condition, it is both a mental phenomena as well as a physical sensation. Certain events in life are inevitable; one being the occurrence of conflict and that once one is faced with conflict, they will react. In his book titles, Managing Conflict in the Church, David Kale lists five levels of conflict; 1”Awareness of Differences, Confronting the Differences, Power Struggles, Fight or Flight, and Intractable.” As I offer the following explanation, I’ll attempt to do so parallel to Prochaska and DiClemente’s six stage transtheoretical model of change. This model consists of the following levels or stages of change, pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse. Kale describes the Awareness of Differences level as when people first become aware that there are differences of opinion, or people have different perspectives on an issue but there has been no communication directly regarding the differences.…

I always viewed myself as a person who handled conflict in a compromising and collaborating way, however according to the Thomas-Kilmann test I actually identify more with the competing and collaborating. With that being said, I was surprised to match up to one my conflicts I tend to strive for which was collaborating, despite this my second top was competing.
