Abortion is a topic that is highly controversial. Whether abortion should be legal or not is an on going debate, diving the nation in half. In 1973, the Supreme Court Decision of the case Roe vs Wade legalized abortion in the US. Since then, there have been about 57,390,897 abortions in the US and 1,356,143,570 worldwide (Guttmacher Institute). As the never ending debate continues, I believe every women has the right to control over her body and no law should be able to take that away from her. In reality, medical research shows it is very likely fetuses do not feel pain until the third trimester begins. Although it is uncertain at what stage the fetus actually develops pain receptors, it is highly likely they develop in the third trimester. Some might point out that at 8 weeks, the fetus has developed peripheral nerve endings that connect to the spinal cord. But, this only results in reflex responses. Because the nerve circuit is not connected and interacting with the brain at this point of the pregnancy, there are no pain receptors present. These procedures are not done carefully or thoroughly, causing health issues afterwards. A study done in 2004 estimated 68,000 deaths caused by unsafe abortions (he World Health Organization). Preventing legalization of abortions does and will not prevent women from taking that action; they will instead seek dangerous procedures. With the legalization of abortion, women have access to safe procedures that will not cause any temporary or permanent harm to their bodies. Choosing abortion is a woman’s constitutional right. The government should not able decide when abortion is acceptable and when it is not. With the legalization of abortion, women have control over their bodies. They will be able to decide if they can financially afford to have a child and prevent future hardships. To lower the rates of maternal deaths and life threatening medical conditions in the child, abortion should be a legal option. A child should come into this world wanted. If a mother decides abortion is what is best for both her and the child, she should be able to make that
