The change of seasons in America 's northern midwest will vex you, distort you, like the sorceress you saw in a movie when you were young and the world was still strange, or the recurring dream you have where you try to run but your legs won 't move. They cycle in disparity, some lasting an eternity, some gone before you can turn your head. The seasons are unpredictable and unfair- first they are gentle as your mother 's touch, and then they are inexplicably violent, like a vengeful god awakened by the land.
