The article that is being reviewed discusses the challenge of duality of command with matrix organizations. This duality exists between the project and functional managers. The article discusses the framework of the matrix organization and the objectives and methodology of three research questions. The article also describes the challenges and power of, and the relationships within the matrix organization. The article also discusses the mechanisms that project and functional managers and their impact on project personnel. This article review is intended to identify and discuss how to overcome the challenge in the duality of command. There are two variations of the matrix organization which have evolved, they are the functional and product matrix. The difference is where the authority lies, in a functional matrix the authority lies with the functional manager, and with a product matrix the authority lies with the project manager. The research also shows that what the project and personnel managers perceive as being the most influential tactics are not what the project personnel perceive. In fact, the project manager believes that passion and inspiration are their best tactic while project personnel see that as their worst tactic, which is the same as the project managers.
