When the group arrived in Texas, they were devastated by the fact that the Civil War drove away the cattle market. They had to avoid going broke because there was no money in the industry they were going to make a life off of. Now they had to transport the herds of cattle back North to Missouri, which is a long torturous journey. In the journal kept by Matt, he writes“Forty days and the dust turned to rain. Short rations with Dunson driving both cattle and men. There was no turning back despite the loss of the other grub wagon. Nights were spent in keeping the herd…”.
