Many americans first started fearing communism between 1947 and 1948. They started fearing it because it was expanding through Europe. The Soviet Union was the biggest country that was led by a communist government during their time. The Soviet Union wanted Europe to only elect a communist leader. The Soviet Union opposed combining west germany. As a result of it the Soviet Union put up a blockade on Berlin. Berlin is the capital of Germany and was also split up between the country. Berlin was deep into Soviet land.
As a result of the blockade, the United States. and Great Britain started the Berlin airlift. This airlift dropped tons of supplies into Berlin by plains. It lasted for more than 10 months. They used over 200,000 flight carriers and dropped 2.3 million tons of supplies for Berlin. Since the Soviet were also trying to avoid a war, they gave in and lifted the blockade.
