Many Tutsis and lower class Hutus are being killed by their own neighbors. The Tutsis and Hutus had the option to follow the genocidal intentions and if they opposed they were targeted. “It is estimated that some 200,000 Hutu, spurred on by propaganda from various media outlets, participated in the genocide. More than 800,000 civilians—primarily Tutsi, but also moderate Hutu—were killed during the campaign” (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). There were many tactics used when killing the Tutsis including rape, the Hutus believed the emotional pain and also the health problems that would result would be enough to destroy the Tutsi ethnic group. “In addition to the brutal mass killings, systematic rape was also widely used as a weapon of war during the Rwandan genocide. The exact number is unknown, but it is estimated that between 250,000 and 500,000 women were raped” (United to End Genocide). This genocide disentangled before the eyes of the media. Everyone was covering the events in Rwanda until it was too dangerous that everyone was encouraged to evacuate. “From the beginning, despite claiming to be caught unaware by the killings, the United States and international community knew of the danger and disorder in Rwanda. But no actions were taken to stop the killings” (United to End Genocide). The United States is a place where foreign countries look at, or even look up to. Wouldn’t we want to set a good example? And wouldn't we want to help out smaller countries in hopes they would do the same for if we are ever in a time of need? ”Months before the killing began, General Romeo Dallaire, the commander of the UN Peacekeepers in Rwanda, sent a now infamous “genocide fax”, warning of an “anti-Tutsi extermination” plot” (United to End Genocide).
