2. Izanagi and his wife Izanami are best known for their part of the creation of a new land that will later became known as Japan with a jeweled spear. By dipping this spear into the ocean and stirring it, the grand eight islands of the Japanese archipelago were created as well as six minor islands. These islands represented their children. They were also responsible for giving birth to a variety of deities that would reside on these islands. During birth to the fire deity she was burned to her death. This caused Izanagi to birth a deity from his tears of grief. He follows his wife to the underworld to try to revive her but is instead met with the horrific site of her decomposing body. This site is just too much for him and he returns home
