Imagine falling asleep as one person one night, then the next morning, you are a completely different person. You do not know who you are anymore. This is what happened to poor Charlie Gordon. The scientific fiction short story “Flowers for Algernon” is written by Daniel Keyes in the mid 1900’s. It is about a man that is 37 years old named Charlie, who has difficulty writing and reading, and anything that requires a fair amount of intelligence overall. After hearing about his fairly low IQ, two doctors named Dr. Nemur, and Dr. Strauss put Charlie through some tests and found him as the “perfect candidate” for their experiment. This one is no exception. Some may claim that Charlie was better off knowing that Joe and Frank made fun of him occasionally, that he was preyed upon by people because of his low intelligence. This claim simply does not compare to the fact that Charlie was happy, he enjoyed his time at the factory. He had a job, a life if you would. Charlie felt wanted. He had more to do than just read. One day after work, “My friends from the factery Joe Carp and Frank Reilly invited me to go to Muggsys saloon for some drinks[sic],” (Keyes 8). Charlie went out for drinks with the guys from work on a very regular basis. There is no reason for Charlie to receive the punishment, that is being called a surgery. In the time before his intelligence was staggeringly high, Charlie would go out after work for drinks almost everyday, enjoying his time with his friends. Charlie was fully functional before the surgery, and was targeted by selfish doctors and scientists. This never had anything to do with helping out a human being who lacks a little bit of the “normal” amount of intelligence, but yet for the fame and glory that would come along with it.
