What Is The Black Cat Gothic

The Black Cat written by Edgar Allan Poe fits the criteria for a gothic literature story but not boldly. In order to fit gothic literature the setting of the story must start familiar or normal but then transition into a darker realm. At the beginning of the story, the man goes over his childhood and then explains that he married early and lived with his wife. They both loved pets so they lived in a house suitable for animals. Nothing out of the normal there but as the story progresses he begins to explain his relationship with Pluto, their black cat but then goes into his whereabouts and at one point says, “One night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town” (7). As the story goes on and the man’s personality changes from dark to darker so does the setting. After he finds another cat that looks just like the one he killed the man gets irritated with it and considers physical violence as he has before. So one day his wife and him go “into the cellar of the old building which our poverty compelled us to inhabit.” (23) From the start you know that nothing good can happen in an abandoned cellar. Things go from bad to worse and long story short he ends up killing his very own wife and getting caught.
