Jay has his riches and success, but he has no one to share it with. He tries to accommodate his loneliness by throwing parties for the community, which he rarely attends.
Jay wishes to reclaim the relationship he had with Daisy who is now engaged with Tom Buchanan.
The story takes place in the fictional town of West Egg, Long Island during the summer of 1922.
The theme describes the American dream, or the failure of the American dream. Jay grew up poor then became rich and successful by illegally selling alcohol during prohibition, yet he also fails in his attempt of achieving the American dream, by not becoming successful legitimately, and reclaiming the love of his life.

The story is told through Nick's point of view.
Nick moved to West Egg, Long Island from the mid west to become a bonds salesman.
Nick watches Gatsby throw many parties and is eventually invited to attend one where he and Jay talk about there time spent in the war.
Nick and Jay Gatsby become friends when Nick helps Jay try to reunite with Daisy.
Myrtle Wilson is the wife of George Wilson, who owns an auto body shop which they also live in.
Myrtle is also having an affair on George with Tom Buchanan, who is cheating on Daisy with her.
Meeting with Tom Buchanan at a hotel they meet to have there affair, Tom breaks Myrtles nose when she annoys him by repeating Daisy's name to him.
Toward the end of the story Myrtle is killed when Daisy accidentally hits her with a car, witch Jay claims responsible for and is later killed for
Before Jay leaves for war, he falls in love with a woman named Daisy; he fears she will not love him because he is poor.
