There have been many instances in the news lately of protests following the shooting of an unarmed African American male by a white police officer. These riots have taken place in cities like Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland. In Ferguson the riot developed following the court’s ruling to not Indict the police officer in the case of Michael Brown. These cases are widely known due to national coverage, but people are unaware of the smaller cases that predate cases like that in Ferguson. This could be due to the fact that these smaller cases came before media decided to push the agenda of Black lives Matter. The South has a reputation for it’s racially driven past and decades of history in righting the wrong’s associated with racial injustice. So why wasn’t The Black lives matter Movement started here as well? For as close-minded as the South and Alabama alone has been labeled, we have made tremendous strides toward racial equality and social justice. This is why the Black lives Matter movement would have failed. Because people like Jacqueline Massey know that through prayer and hopeful nonviolence we can accomplish more than we ever thought we could. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words toward nonviolence have transcended to future generations and prepared for resisting aggression, hatred and violence. Just like in the Sandy Hook shooting the media’s agenda was in favor of stricter gun laws versus mental health awareness. Following the Sandy hook school shooting came stricter gun laws in states like New York and Connecticut.
