1. Leadership the action of leading a person or organization. For me leadership is a relationship. Leadership development is the ongoing process I need to use in order to become a successful leader. Over the years I have gathered leadership traits from those I looked up to, there was plenty to learn and still more to learn today. If you asked me about my leadership philosophy this time last year the result would be quite different from the leader I am today. Leadership views and value change with situations that come up in our life. A life event happened in November of 2015. My spouse of 8 years passed unexpectedly after a short battle at a local hospital. My world came crashing down.
2. I used to be that leader that could inspire a shared vision for my crew. My confidence level was high, I was on the forefront of exciting new airframes and I had tools to make my crew successful in their job. I used to have long talks with my new petty officers on how exciting our deployments were and why I wish I was in their shoes. The dream of being a Chief was obtained and I wanted those around me to do everything they can to make themselves ready to take my job one day. I also did whatever I could in order to satisfy command needs, the big picture was painted and I had buy in by from my command and crew. I felt I was good at what I was trying to accomplish. Reviewing the Leadership challenge (LPI360) worksheet, something changed. I am not that person anymore not by choice but by circumstance. Based on what I know about myself and what I have been through, I have put together my Leadership Philosophy: I want to encourage an environment that stays positive throughout their tenure in the Coast Guard. I want to strengthen my workspace by facilitating relationships of trust in order to have a common goal and vision. It is hard for me to venture out of the comfort zone but I want to listen carefully to the pulse and ideas of the people I lead, because part of leading is listening. The ideas of those I lead can easily be my ideas too, A fresh look on how things are done will often surprise even the modest learner. The future of the Coast Guard can be as bright as new recruit sees it or as gloom as a salty Chief in visions it, I vow to make encompass a bright future for the new generation to make their mark. On a final note leadership qualities you have inside will always be there, some of them don’t come out until a life event puts a spin on things. Change is good though, I think if not for my life event I would have been less compassionate. As a senior enlisted leader I will continue to uphold Coast Guard Core Values and enforce the rules and regulations, while continuing to grow within my leadership values addressed in reference
