A system-based risk management program’s goals will be designed to support the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan as they directly relate to risk management and patient safety. Success factors include the development of a system that has the ability to oversee the reporting of near misses, potentially unsafe conditions, and adverse events. The program will follow the directives of governing organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Health and Human Services, and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM). With leadership commitment, this program’s overall goal is to manage the healthcare organization’s risk while improving the quality and safety of patient care in order to better patient outcomes (Youngberg, 2012).

This data will be collected and interpreted to help the organization to assess, develop, implement, and monitor risk management plans. The evaluation of this internal data will help to align goals in such way that they are focused on improvement and will identify top performers and possible best-practices (Rocco, 2012).
Both internal and external benchmarking data will be utilized by the risk management program. External data will be compared by using a company such as Quest, Premiere, or NDQI. The risk management program will have internal data compared against facilities similar to our own looking to see where we are against the top decile. Benchmarking will provide data such as malpractice claims or suits filed because adverse events such as:
• Medical Errors
• Hospital Acquired Infections
• Hospital
