“Young Goodman Brown” was written around the 1830s, which is roughly about a hundred and eighty years ago and gives us an insight on how Hawthorne feels. In the story he refers to how his grandfather’s and father’s doings are part of the devil. Hawthorne felt remorseful and ashamed of what they did; he could not have found a better approach to describe how he feels by writing a story that incorporates his emotions without revealing his past. The main character’s name is sort of like a mockery because his name is Goodman Brown, but his temptation plays a huge role. When he leaves his wife faith to go do his evil purpose, he encounters the devil disguised as an old man. The old man carries a staff with him to teleport Goodman Brown throughout his journey. When he meets this man, Brown’s faith is tested and questioned as he grips the staff. “…Brown grasp his staff and set forth again” (Hawthorne 392). He takes a taste of the forbidden fruit and gives in to the devil’s illusions like Adam and Eve. The devil plays mind tricks on Brown and that throws him off.
