What is sustainability? This is a question that not many people can answer. This can partially be because there are various definitions of the word and it can mean something else for different people. However, sustainability can be easily defined as the development of ways to prevent the exhaustion of our natural resources. We need sustainability to provide our generation, as well as future generations with a better overall quality of life and for the Earth to keep upholding human, plant and animal life. In order to develop a sustainable future, we have to find ways to preserve and protect our environment and to use the resources its given us to do this. For example, Dancing Rabbit is an ecovillage that is working to build a healthy alternative to the modern US culture. They want to live in an ecologically sound community that serves as an example of positive human action within the natural world. Their primary focus is ecological sustainability. They build their homes using alternative techniques such as straw bale and cob, and they power them with renewable energy from the Sun and wind. The food they eat is local, organic, and in-season foods. Also, much of the acreage that they have is reserved for the wildlife. They are also reintroducing native prairie plants to help revitalize that regions biodiversity. Not only that but they have also planted over 10,000 trees which will provide a sustainable source of wood for their community. This is just one example of people working to a sustainable future. Also, it’s important to use resources more efficiently. This could be a hybrid car, efficient appliances, or a fuel-efficient form of transportation like biking. Reducing unnecessary resource use is also important because our society gotten used to using resources whenever they want. However, people can do things like reducing their waste by recycling, composting, using local food products, turning off lights that are going unused, and buying products with less packaging.
