What Is Susan's Behavior Not Normal

Improved Essays
I believe that Susan’s behavior is not normal and she does have an anxiety disorder because she is meticulously rehearsing her material repeatedly. It’s normal to have minor fears and anxiety over public speaking; however, when the fear or anxiety is too cumbersome and consumes a person’s life taking them away from their normal routine; which is when the condition effects a person’s behavior or ability to cope with everyday stresses. The fear of public speaking would be associated with a social anxiety because it involves a fear of being scrutinized in a public setting.

In the case of Nadine, we are observing extreme symptoms of anxiety involving any kind of interaction with people outside of her home. Although her mother describes her behavior as “long withstanding shyness”, her inability to speak, compelled confinement to her house, and panic-related somatic responses when interacting with others suggest a much more severe diagnoses than “long withstanding shyness”. We think that it is most appropriate to diagnose Nadine with Social Anxiety Disorder, F40.10. Also applicable to Nadine is Other Personal Risk Factors, Z91.89.…

An Overview of Selective Mutism Roxana Fleneury Brenau University Having an anxiety disorder is challenging because in many situations it is hard to prevent or stop it from occurring. One of these disorders is selective mutism. One of the key characteristics of selective mutism is the inability to speak in a social situation or in a place where speaking is expected. As in the case of Jenny from Helping Children with Selective Mutism, she speaks comfortably at home to her parents but when visitors are present she will not speak and at times hides behind her parents. “Remembering is an ethical act…” “Remembering is an ethical act, has ethical value in and of itself. Memory is, achingly, the only relation we can have with the dead. So the belief that remembering is an ethical act is deep in our natures as humans, who know we are going to die, and who mourn those who in the normal course of things die before us—grandparents, parents, teachers, and older friends. Heartlessness and amnesia seem to go together” (Sontag, 2003, 115).…

Susan’s introduction started off with a life experience example about going off to camp at 9 years old where she thought her introverted upbringing of reading books in a quite group environment was going to be a shared interest amongst other camp goers. Susan quickly realized that the camp she was attending was intended to do quite the opposite as her counselor excitingly expressed that everyday camp spirit would be rallied by reciting a cheer and the intent was to help introverts be more outgoing. Susan uses this example to help the audience understand her introverted background. She also goes on to explain that she felt the need to prove herself as an introvert by displaying a lifestyle as an extrovert even though she knew how she truly felt.…

My problem I have in my life is public speaking as from an early age I began taking speech therapy classes once a week until the start of middle school. These therapy sessions helped me to be able to start speaking in public. However, the real issue that came with public speaking was not due to the fear of the people itself but rather the mental anxiety of stuttering or slurring a word in the progression of a speech or a presentation completely destroys my confidence of the delivery. In this sense putting attention to the fact that I had a speech impediment at an early age only forced the idea in my head that I will make a mistake while speaking in front of a crowd. In middle school almost every class required a oral presentation on a quarterly…
