What Is Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar?

Decent Essays
Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) is named after a Father and son who made an effort to study the wave propagation in the iron wire during 1872-1914. John Hopkinson (1849-1898) introduced an experimental investigation of stress wave propagation in the iron wire in 1872 and his son, Bertram Hopkinson (1874-1918) employed dynamic load exerted by detonation of high explosive, as well as impact by means of a long steel rod, a short billet and a ballistic pendulum, in order to obtain pressure-time curve [1]. In 1941 Dennison Bancroft solved Pochhammer bar frequency equation made a significant improvement in the area of dispersion correction. Since the measurement equipment was inaccurate, Davis [2] improved the measurement technique by utilizing

Benjamin Franklin is a famous scientist who changed the world with this kite experiment. His experiment is called "The Philadelphia Experiment". The lab itself was the study of the relationship between the electricity in the lightning and a lightning rod itself. Franklin's theory involved the lightning bolt neutralizing the total or even a piece of the charged storm cloud. The bolt would then send energy to the high lightning rod.…

In this week’s article reflection, I learned more about the AR-10. Springfield Armory selected two rifles in 1956 to be tested for military use. According to Bartocci (2014), almost immediately failures erupted. These would include broken extractors, failures to feed, bolt over base, failures of the muzzle compensator, bent gas tubes and pierced primers. After failing to impress Springfield Armory, the test rifle was sent back to Armalite for correction.…

One of the most notable advances in artillery weapons technology in WWII was the proximity fuze. In both of the Great wars, the fuses available for achieving air bursts were quit unsatisfactory — requiring daily registrations and settings at the guns. Needed, was a fuze that would explode the shell when it arrived in the proximity of the target — without registrations and individual settings. The U.S. put some of its best electronic and engineering experts on this very complicated problem. By 1944 the U.S. had built an operational proximity fuse for use against ground targets and the artillerymen called it Pozit or VT (variable time).…

The twin reversed arterial perfusion is a rare condition with a non-viable acardiac twin and a lot of risks to the pump twin (prematurity, cardiac failure, hydrops and intrauterine demise). It was first described in 1942 [9]. This condition cannot be prevented and is unique to monozygotic monochorionic twin gestations, and if untreated is associated with a high (50% - 75%) perinatal mortality of the pump twin, especially when acardiac/twin ratio is greater than 70% of the size of the pump twin by estimated weight [2] [4] . It is more common in nulliparous women [4]. The pump twin is structurally normal, may develop polyhydramnios and cardiac failure.…

On September 13th 1848 Phineas Gage was working as part of a crew cutting a railroad in the bedrock of Vermont. Gage was using a tamping iron to pack explosives into a hole. The tamping iron - 1 metre long, 3 cm in diameter and roughly 6 kilograms in weight – ignited the explosives and shot the iron rod through the foramens left cheek, ripped into his brain and exited through his skull, before landing several metres away [1]. Blinded to his left eye with traumatic brain injury, when Mr Gage was presented to Dr John Harlow, he is reported to have remained lucid enough to tell a doctor, “Here is business enough for you”[1]. Such injury would inevitably cause notoriety amongst the locals, but instead, Dr Harlow etched it into history books…

Growth Plate Injuries A growth plate is the part of the bone that is located at the ends of every long bone, near the epiphysis. It’s made of cartilage and it is where the length of the bone increases. Growth plate injuries only are relevant to young ages because when an adolescent's bone stops growing the growth plate hardens and becomes part of the bone itself. When a growth plate it damaged before ossifying, it may cause problems in the child’s growth of that specific bone.…

As sports keep growing on the degree of popularity, bone fractures happen with an increasing frequency; there are six of the most major and the most common types of fractures. The first type of the six majors is called a Simple or a Closed Fracture. As defined by Robert, a Simple Fracture is, “a break in the bone that may be complete or incomplete, but it doesn’t pierce the skin” (Robert 307). This type of fracture on the average side, since it depends on the type of accident in a sport for a complete or an incomplete might happen. It can also be told that some fractures may pierce the skin, but this one doesn’t.…

Sushil Bhandari (1997) defined vibration as a repeated movement in the normal rest position. The parameters involved with vibration are commonly amplitude or displacement and velocity or acceleration of the ground movement (Visvan, 2005). During demolition operation, vibration is normally caused by the impact of fallen structures or by the use of explosives (BS 6187:2000), which could pose detrimental effects of structural damage of adjacent premises, buried services like gas pipes, disturbance of sensitive equipment like computers, and also public perception of risk. The Australian Demolition Code of Practice, AS (2016) recommends that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential and commercial structures should be maintained below a peak…
