The movie gives examples through the way the characters speak and interact with each other one way this is shown is with the use of verbal and nonverbal communication techniques. Verbal communication is the use of speech to send a message to someone. This is shown just by conversation between any one of the characters. For instance, when Tillie is talking to Dr. Prentice in his room. She states that she does not like “his smooth talking black power nonsense” (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)) and also states that if “he brings any trouble she's going to show him what black power really means” (What Black Power Really Means). Along with the verbal communication in Tillie’s threat, there is also non-verbal communication. When talking to Dr. Prentice she gets up into his personal space, wags her finger and when she leaves she slams the door. These are all uses of nonverbal communication to show that she is angry at Dr. Prentice and wanted to make what she is said is known to him. When she is talking to someone not of color, the Draytons, she is polite, listens to them, and she talks back with respect. Tillie also says to Dr. Prentice that she doesn’t “care to see a member of my own race getting above himself” (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
