What Is Social Media Desensitization

Desensitizing the World Have you ever walked into a house in this generation and there was no television in sight? In this generation it is nearly impossible to walk into a house and not discover a television somewhere in the house. In the same house you will witness the use of social media through phones, tablets, and many other technological objects. Children can access almost anything with these advanced objects, and in today’s society that is a scary thing. Within minutes a teenager can access pornograpgic images on their phone from anywhere they want, including school. The amount of violence and inappropriate content that is on social media is increasing every year and is desensitizing the general public through sources such as, but are not limited to, movies, social media, and video games. On social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, sexual activity and violence are constantly posted for anyone to view. These common events are impacting the lives of many people in a negative way. “Extensive research evidence indicates that media violence can contribute to aggressive behavior, desensitization to violence, nightmares, and fear of being harmed” (Media Violence 1). A study also found that “The weight of scientific evidence has been convincing to pediatricians, with more than 98% of pediatricians in one study expressing the personal belief that media violence affects children’s aggression” (Media Violence 2).
