As a result, it is important to have the best people possible on the job to prevent the abuse of power. For instance, many departments now employ a very rigorous selection process, but some police officers still end up unprofessional. This poses a question if bad police behavior is influenced by other police officers? In order to answer that question, Allison T. Chappell and Alex R. Piquero from University of Florida decided to conduct a study to determine if Social Learning Theory applies to police. To determine this they organized study featuring Philadelphia Police. Specifically, the study looked at citizen complaints. The citizen complaints are used to determine police misconduct, police citizen relation and police productivity. (Chappell and Piquero, 2004, p.92) Before conducting the study the objective and hypothesis had to be formed. As humans, we have an urge to belong, socialize and fall into the status quo. This can lead people to buying certain brand of shoes, car, and cigarettes. The social learning theory can explain how people can commit unimaginable acts that they never taught possible. Currently, the nation is in shock after the members of Oklahoma University’s fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon sang a racist chant on the bus. All of the people involved have come out and said they were not racist and do not condone this type of behavior. Most of the people involved are freshman and sophomore year in college. They learned the chant from people with influence and in order to appease them they committed that infamous act. Those things happened involving adults that have impulse control and should have known better. When it comes to juveniles it is a whole different game. Most juveniles are extremely vulnerable to peer pressure. Also, the juveniles cannot make rational choices and think about how the consequences of their actions will affect their future. This study and its findings can be used in many ways. The parents, together with schools officials and social services personnel could use the study findings to keeps kids from succumbing to bad influences of social learning theory. Instead, they can focus on keeping them busy with school work and extracurricular clubs. This will likely lead to parents becoming a role model and someone that the kids
