Sierra Leone is a Western African country that borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Guinea to the north and Liberia to the south. With a total area of 71 740 square kilometres, Sierra Leone is slightly smaller than the US state of South Carolina. It has a tropical climate, a summer rainy season from May to December, and a winter dry season from December to April. Its coast is dotted with mangrove swamps, and its terrain is comprised of wooded hills, upland plateau and eastern mountains. Sierra Leone is one of the wettest places in coastal western Africa; its coast can get up to 495 cm of precipitation a year, and 75% of its land is arable. As a result, 56.2% of the total landmass is used for agriculture and 62% of the population depends
