Stepping outside the old, log cabin the young girl took a deep breath of fresh mountain air, then stretched her back and leaned from side to side. Her grandfather had built the cabin some fifty-odd years earlier as a wedding gift for his new bride. The young girl’s name was, Charity. She loved her grandfather and she loved the old cabin, it had been her home her entire life.
Charity knew that something special was going to happen that day, she could feel it deep inside her soul… Her grandpa had always said that she had the “gift,” the same as her grandmother, Mi 'the be, had. Me’thebe, meant Shadowy Moon, in English.
Charity’s mother had been named Gige’sdi, because of the violet color of her eyes. Being the daughter of a Frenchman and a Cherokee

You weren’t knee-high to a grasshopper at the time, so that’s why ya don’t remember ‘em. I’ve known Eli his whole life- Me and his father, Henry, came to these hills over sixty years ago.”
“He must live a long ways,” mumbled Charity.
“Naw, not that far,” her grandfather responded. “No more ’n about twenty miles down the Savannah. I usually stop off over at his place on my way to and from Fort Charlotte. Sometimes, Eli goes with me down there- when he‘s in need of supplies, or his woman is in need of cloth or other womanly things.”
They finished up a quick breakfast and had the wagon loaded in no time at all. Driving away from the old cabin, Charity did not even look back- she was more interested in what lay ahead than what she was leaving behind. Besides, they’d be back in less than a week, or so she thought…
For the first few miles, the ride was uneventful; they were both quiet, each, with stuff other than talking on their minds. Even if there had been something new and beautiful to see, Charity’s mind was on where they were going and who she might meet. It was not on the beautiful mountains, the valleys, the trees, or the animals that surrounded
