Final Fall 2017
Question 1
“You learn how to fight?” When I told my friends that I am taking a self-defense class, most of them asked me questions like this. In some people’s opinions, self-defense involves violence and it is just a euphemistic word of “fight”. Indeed, in class, we do learn how to fight against people when we are attacked, but I believe self-defense is not violence at all.

For me personally, I value and care the people I love more than myself. I have more courage to fight again people or things if this is for the right of my loved ones. In the real life, if something happens to me, I will probably just tolerate it without fighting back, but if the same thing happens to my mom, my other family members, or my best friends, I will probably fight back without thinking too much about consequences.
For example, (the topic is probably a little sensitive) if someone is sexually assaulting me, I don’t think I will would be able to kill the person as long as the person does not intend to kill me. However, if the same person is sexually assault my loved ones, like my daughter or my sister, I would probably unable to control my anger, and be able to permanently injure or kill another human using self-defense (even though it is not “self”-defense anymore). This does not obey my ethical codes, but the values I hold can win over the ethical codes I hold for myself.
In conclusion, different people have different moral standards, so we may make different decisions under the same scenario. My ethics code tells me that if it is required to do so to survive, it is morally right to use self-defense to fight for my right and the right of my loved ones, even if the consequence is to permanently injure or kill another
