A yes vote on this measure means that citizens are against recognizing same sex marriage in California. The yes ad on proposition 8 portrays the idea of recognizing same sex marriage as something that will cause multiple consequences such as impacting churches, children, adoption, etc. The participants of the ad use strong vocabulary to show that same sex marriage should not continue to be legalized and that it will only affect the traditional concept of marriage, which to them is between a man and women. Measuring the attitudes of people toward same-sex marriage through survey data is not sufficient because people will either support or oppose the policy depending on the negative and positive considerations that they have of it and will answer any questions based on those mixed feelings. Also, survey data is not sufficient to measure the attitudes of people because people that are more aware of same-sex marriage are more exposed to political communications. Those who receive more information on a topic are more selective and have more to consider. According to the Receive Accept model, the citizens who are less aware will receive fewer information and reject propositions based on their own conclusions. Those who are more aware are more likely to state their opinions that are ideologically consistent with their predispositions. The underlying message of the commercial ultimately rejects the outdated concept that same-sex marriage is “unnatural” nor should same-sex couples be allowed to adopt foster children. People working behind the scenes of the commercial knew that by using rhetorical device of propaganda (i.e. the concept of same-sex adoption being a new normalcy), that it would cause controversy. (Especially those among the older generation).Alas, the commercial editors also knew that such a commerical would undoubtedly lead to a discussion about gay couples and their right to adopt children. Such a conversation could lead supporters of same-sex marriage to continue their foght for LGBTQ…

Sexual orientation has been a heavily disputed topic for decades. At first no one really cared, but the more it was put out there the more it became evident that this couldn’t be ignored. It wasn’t until June 26, 2013 that gay marriage accepted in all fifty states. It is gradually becoming more widely accepted, but there are still large groups out there that do not support it. In Sager’s article Refuting Anti-Gay Rights Arguments, we see that he has a much stronger source because he comes back with textual evidence, while Dawson’s article Bisexuality is a real Thing, is much weaker because it is based off her opinion.…

Prop 8 laws were passed in California in November 2008 that decertified same sex marriage in their state. However, Prop 8 was also created by opponents of same-sex marriage to the final ruling on same sex marriage cases. I believe all the points of this article were valid. Also, I like how the article was broken down into six categories that show you the negative effects of Prop 8. After reading the article the one thing that stuck out to me was, what marriage is, marriage to me means a commitment by two people who love each other regardless of their sex or gender. Likewise, I do not feel that prop 8 can hurt the family, I believe it is all about how you present yourself to your family and friends, despite all the harms that people state same-sex couples can cause because when raising children it is all the same because we all have personal issues regardless of sex or gender that is just a part of…

I believe Lewis gave a very effective analysis of the advertisement describing it in such detail made us able to picture the ad so clearly. Lewis does an excellent job in describing the image of the ad yet argues that everything about it serves as influence for the genders. With everything from gender, to skin color, to vocabulary, even the placement of the background photos are intentionally arranged to form a “V” in an attempt to give an image of moving in opposite directions. This advertisement is a blatant example of gender stereotyping in the media. The male is shown as dominant and assertive; the woman is shown as weak, soft, and above all else: sexy.…

In an essay that I read titled the “ Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne, she also expresses herself in her essay on how women are being treated in advertisements. However, she also specifies how ads can be misinterpreted by viewers, in this case women. In her essay she talks about a similar advertisement to the Axe shower Gel. Marriage equality has been a long time argument across the United States. While the law passed in 2015 by the Supreme Court granting marriage equality, there are still arguments, primarily fueled by religious views, of what a marriage is. Therefore, dividing the country and leading the United States down a path that infringes on constitutional rights of the people in the LGBTQ community when it comes to marriage. One must ask, what would it take to bring the United States out if it is current path due to the clearly divided views on what a marriage is?
