A2. Washington Irving writes the short story, “Rip Van Winkle”, as a way to show the newly formed United States of America that it is not only okay but crucial to accept and recognize their ancestor’s natural history. During this time, colonist wanted to completely erase their past culture to create a better and unique American culture. In attempt to show how important their ancestors are, Washington Irving focuses on the Dutch culture that still bled throughout America at this time throughout the story of “Rip Van Winkle”. Irving writes that the main character, Rip Van Winkle, leaves the village and takes a nap on the Catskill mountains after meeting with Hollanders and when he wakes up to return to the village everything was changed and history was destroyed. This symbolizes how Irving felt towards Americans destroying their past to create a new culture and the repercussions of this action. Washington Irving uses symbolism to show the path that Americans were heading down by completely separating themselves from their ancestors culture. If Americans at this time deleted their past our culture would not be the same today and would not be true to who we are because all of American history shapes today’s culture.

In Napier’s view, the main subject matters of “The Birth-Mark” are union and separation. Napier starts of her article by attaching one of these two subjects to each of the main characters; consequently, Georgiana is deemed a symbol of union, and Aylmer is said to represent separation. Georgiana comes to embody unity primarily because of the birthmark upon her left cheek, “It is the birthmark that is the center of her reconciliatory nature, which joins her simultaneously to the world of men and the realm of fairies” (Napier 32). Contrastingly, Napier points out that Aylmer is frequently associated with images of removal, “he dreams of surgical operations; the distilling apparatus that dominates his laboratory is a fitting emblem of his obsession…

Washington Irving creates this social conflict between the characters Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel in, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Ichabod Crane, a strict school teacher and singing instructor, represents the lower-class in this short story and Katrina, daughter of a wealthy farm owner, represents the upper-class. On the surface, the text tells a story of a poor school teacher who falls madly in “love” with an upper-class beauty queen who ultimately rejects Ichabod — or so we assume. However, Irving goes much deeper than a surface level conflict between two socially unequal characters. Andrea Tinnemeyer, Department Chair, English Department at The College Preparatory School, states, “by casting Katrina as the love interest and point of contention and competition between the two characters of Crane and Bones, Irving recasts the Revolutionary War in terms of a love triangle.…
