The Greek word for corrupt is dieftharménos which also means bad, decayed, and rotten. This is referring to when a plant becomes rotten. He is comparing this to our actions and how we speak to others. Our mouths can become something that creates something bad and becomes sinful. He also doesn’t want us using this language to one another because it doesn’t edify the people of the church. Therefore, we need to speak in love and care so we can build a better kingdom of the Lord. By tearing one another down we are shaping a negative impact on the way we as Christians should live. Instead of speaking corruption towards others, Paul wants the church to speak in a way “that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Paul uses the word edification which also mean to instruct, council, and to comfort others. We can also connect James 3:8,9,10, “8 but no man can tame the tongue.
