What Is Reading Accuracy?

Mrs. Sweeney, Alina’s remedial reading teacher sees Alina daily in a one-on-one setting. Mrs. Sweeney reports that Alina struggles in the areas of phonics and fluency. Alina’s accuracy and automaticity with sight words are reportedly inconsistent. As a third grade student, she is currently averaging 60 words per minute, in comparison to an average third grader reading 110 words per minute. Despite Alina’s difficulty in the area of reading fluency, Mrs. Sweeney states that she is able to comprehend texts. Mrs. Sweeney is currently teaching Alina several skills, including reading multisyllabic words, developing accuracy and automaticity with high-frequency words, and increasing her phonic skills. According to Mrs. Sweeney, Alina puts forth “excellent”
