Student three doesn’t want to student two in his group because he believes that everybody from student two’s country is lazy. Additionally, student three is also racially stereotyped but by student one. She believes that student three is from a country where terrorists are known to come from. Sometimes it is helpful for us to be able to categorise information, but if we apply this in general to people of different cultures it can become negative. In many ways racial stereotyping has become so ingrained that we do not realise we are engaging in discriminatory behaviour. Student one makes an assumption about a whole racial group by categorising all people from student three’s country as terrorists because terrorists have been known to come from his country. “Racial stereotypes are harmful because they ignore the full humanity and uniqueness of all people… people who are repeatedly labeled in negative ways will begin to develop feelings of inferiority”. Racial stereotypes can have harmful effects thus it is essential that people make a commitment in order to try to overcome racial stereotyping. Possible solutions to overcome racial stereotyping are by firstly, recognizing that it is in our human nature to hold racial stereotypes. Secondly, we should try to become aware of our beliefs and values and if we have a stereotype about a particular race we should try to base it on fact rather than stereotypes.

While watching the class videos “Girls on the Team” (10/27/17) and “Skirting the Issue” (10/30/17), I discovered examples of gender discrimination. Discrimination is an action or behavior that treats a person unequally because of their membership in a group (McIntyre 2011). Gender is culturally defined expectations about attributes and behaviors of males and females (McIntyre 2011). The videos “Girls on the Team” and “Skirting the Issue” display gender discrimination by using judgment of dominant and minority groups, stereotypes, and the ‘fag discourse’. The videos “Girls on the Team” and “Skirting the Issue” identify how context matters in terms of dominant and minority groups.…

Throughout the texts, there were mentions of black people who were murdered for unfair reasons and in unjust circumstances. When these people were killed, efforts were taken to ensure that it appeared as though these murders had happened for just reasons. Whether it be by the media, or by individuals, people continuously try to justify the killing of black people, usually by police or hate crime. Tamir Rice, who was only 12 years old when he was shot and killed by police, was criminalized. He was in a public park with a fake gun, and the police automatically assumed him to be a threat.…

Cara, your perspective on Jon viewing himself as American and not a different ethnicity is understood. I have met a few people who genuinely thought of themselves as only American and they disregard their ethnicities. Some said that they do this to avoid stereotypes and a few truly do not know what their actual ethnicity is. Additionally, I agree that Jon has been objectified to cultural stereotyping of African Americans that leaves him with negative feelings about culture. Stereotypes can be damaging to a person’s self-esteem, which could result in individuals wanting to avoid drawing attention to their ethnicity/culture.…

About 110,489,000 of Americas are on welfare today. 39% of those individuals are black and 39% of the individuals are white (Statistic brain 2016). However society and media doesn’t portray, show, or talk about the 39% of whites on welfare. Americans perception of welfare dependency is viewed as a black cultural trait, not realizing the welfare program systematically excluded black people for most of its history (Roberts 1999: 204). And if it wasn’t for the civil rights movement Blacks wouldn’t be a part of the welfare program at all because it was created for only white mothers.…

Middle-Easterners are terrorists, African-Americans are violent, “white” people have guns and Asians are all smart. These are all stereotypes that affect people's everyday lives. Every person, young and old, is labelled with either positive or negative stereotypes. The three sources, “Hum” by Naomi Shihab Nye, “Behind the Bedroom Wall” by Laura E. Williams and “Do teachers treat children differently based on their color? Study says yes” by Yolanda Young show that stereotypes can control people's lives and because of this our society needs to end it.…

Stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination has been a core topic in social psychological research in an attempt to understand the origins of biases and impact on groups and individuals (Dagner & Dalege, 2013). The terms prejudice, discrimination, and stereotype, are often used mutually in daily dialogue. Stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination are biases that contribute to the creation of social inequality in the society (Fiske, 2008). Most often people are biased against other individuals outside of their social connection, displaying stereotypical behaviors, showing prejudice and discrimination. Formerly, individuals are more explicit with their biases, however during the 20th century, it has become less socially acceptable to exhibit bias, prejudice, and…

Due to the binary nature of stereotyping, contesting it can prove to be a challenge. I agree with Hall’s assessment of the benefits and disadvantages of the three different strategies of combatting stereotypes. Hall confronted the nature of this issue by highlighting the various ways in which these strategies may or may not prove to be successful. Throughout The Spectacle of the ‘Other’, Hall (1997) suggested “how and why attempting to dismantle or subvert a racialized regime of representation is an extremely difficult exercise” (p. 276). Hall (1997) admitted that “there can be no absolute guarantees” in terms of the effectiveness of these strategies (p.…

These types of practices are used to prove what group is more superior among over another group or an individual (Feenstra, 2013). Today we live in a very cultural and ethnically world that embraces our differences. Because of the different beliefs and social practices that are not considered socially acceptable, people are sometimes discriminated against (Feenstra, 2013). Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination are similar, but yet very different (Fiske, 2010).…

This is a challenge in itself. When people are unwilling to engage in information to make fair judgements towards a person or group of people, it often results in negative stereotyping (Department of Education and Training, 2009, p. 23). These negative views towards ethnic and cultural groups need to be address. Encouraging non stereotypical views should be done from a young age. Stereotypical comments can be used as an opportunity to challenge these assumptions made towards others.…
