What Is Racial Discrimination In The United States

Improved Essays
Students at colleges nationwide are expressing their displeasure with what they call “microaggression,” or subtle racist comments or actions directed against minorities. While it is true that all people are equal and that racism should not be tolerated, it seems that the U.S. is creating a “victimhood culture” in an attempt to be politically correct. Undoubtedly, racism still occurs and it is still a problem. However, some of these so called micro attacks might be unintentional, while the “victims” blow the comments out of proportion in their minds. A potential example of this scenario would be a complaint made by Leslie Bernsten, a psychology graduate student whose mother is Nicaraguan and father is white. When she was applying to

Critical Race and Conflict Theory Critical race theory focuses on the fact that racism is a normal part of American society rather than an anomaly (Marx, 2008). It is something so entrenched in society and the institutions that uphold it, that it seems normal to people in the American culture (Harrell & Pezeshkian, 2008). This can be seen in the use of microaggressions. Microaggerssions are brief everyday nonverbal and verbal slights sent to people of color unconsciously by white people, who do not understand the message they are communicating (Harrell & Pezeshkian, 2008).…

Kristen Myers dedicated this book to the discussion of what she calls “racetalk.” She defines racetalk as “the vocabulary and conceptual frameworks that we use to denigrate different races and ethnicities in our everyday lives” (pg. 2). In this book, she defines the signification of three groups: whites, blacks and browns. It is important that she defines the signification of each group in order to better understand what gives the dominant group its power. The book then moves on to how boundaries are constructed and policed in order to keep this structure of dominance by whites, how this system is justified, and examines how this system can be challenged and changed.…

The reading for this week correlated well to each other, in the sense that they all play a critical role in demonstrating how culture, perception, and generations have on our daily interactions. These articles demonstrate how language is interpreted differently and has an impact on an individual differently. In the book is it stated that “words, in addition to being symbolic, are also arbitrary. They derive their meaning from the people who use them”. A great example to this statement is the usage of the N word.…

Entry 1 I am nervous and excited for this class. I want to know and understand the systemic oppression people of color face, but I am afraid, and embarrassed, that I know so little in the first place. The only background I have for this course is that I live in America and I read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. She argues mass incarceration is the new Jim Crow. Alexander’s book was so shocking to me that I just wanted to know more, like what the social implication are of this type of oppression.…

A microaggression is characterized as a seemingly minor or harmless offense, often unintentional, that threatens validity of a minority students struggle. Examples of microaggressions can include asking a person of color where they are from, referring to oneself as “colorblind” or wearing a culturally insensitive halloween costume. Trigger warnings, on the other hand, are written warnings that precede content taught in classrooms that may be offensive or triggering to students suffering from PTSD. These warnings can be present before a novel, such as “The Great Gatsby” to warn readers of its descriptions of wealth inequality and misogynistic violence, or before descriptions of torture in certain class discussions. Trigger warnings in particular have emerged to protect the wellbeing of students who have been negatively affected by racism, sexism, ableism, cissexism or classism, mainly liberal campuses, and have generated significant opposition from students and professors alike.…

Black Citizen Racism can scream—segregation, Jim Crow laws, hate crimes, and discrimination—but racism can also whisper. Claiming instead the private, personal space as its territory, microaggressions describe the various ways in which racism infiltrates everyday interactions in a minimized, rather than maximal, form. These manifest as subtly charged statements, impulsive reactions generated towards one’s race before realizing the implications and apologizing. While the apology may be received, the damage is done and the microaggression has left its scar on the victim. Claudia Rankine’s Citizen calls attention to a scarred section of the populace through its depiction of the myriad microaggressions that plague race relations in America.…

The sentence, “And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description” is repeated. I think it’s repeated because the author want to remind us that there is always someone mistaken for the criminal. This is important because in the black community, people are always being frisk for unjustified reasons or rather they fit the description. Everytime I read that sentence, I start to think deeper and and ask myself why is there always one other person that fits the criminal description? I learned in my American Government class that black people are the highest victims of stop and frisk.…

Another interesting point that Kaliss mentioned in his book is that racial integration in sports can also influence other people watching and not just the athlete playing. Sports in a way can influence the stereotype and the beliefs of others. He mentioned that athletes are able to create a space that temporarily adjourned people’s conviction (Kaliss 174). In a way, when people are engrossed with the play that the athletes show, fans will always cheer them on regardless of the skin color, race or gender. In my primary source, the movie trailer of “Remember the Titans”, we observed a scene where the fans are all cheering for the football team even though the one who scored the point was a black athlete.…

After the 70s, America became both culturally liberal, and economically conservative. While African Americans continued to face continued police violence and injustice, Bush’s unwillingness to be called a racist highlights how cultural importance was given to being perceived as non-racist. A similar desire was seen in being perceived as non-sexist, as women’s role in the workplace grew, and anti-abortion groups’ rhetoric focused on the rights of the unborn fetus. Other groups like Asians and Latinos also gained more equality, and LGBT advocates made large strides by winning greater legal and social acceptance for LGBT individuals. At the same time, an economic conservatism was made apparent by privatization of prisons and war efforts, and excessive…
