Mechanical damage or an impairment to the brain results in the first type of prosopagnosia called Acquired Prosopagnosia. (Dean, 2010) This type of prosopagnosia is a result of damage done to certain regions in the brain, particularly the occipital and temporal lobes which play a major role in perception and memory. An injury at an area called the fusiform gyrus that is found within each temporal lobe, could be the main factor in the loss of face recognition. Since brain damage doesn’t precisely occur in one area, prosopagnosia is most likely accompanied by other visual and cognitive issues. (The Brain Injury Association, n.d.) A second type of prosopagnosia is Developmental or Congenital Prosopagnosia which is usually present since birth.
