Procrastination-I’ll Make A Better Title Later A high school student has a research paper due tomorrow and they need to start writing it. They turn on their computer and gather materials, only to realize it might take them all night to write seven pages! Now they have no choice but to shut off their phone, block out the world, and grab that extra caffeine they’re going to need to stay awake! They thought they planned to write most of the paper on their free day this week? Oh wait…they did, but instead of executing that plan, they binge-watched Netflix for five hours straight. Well, at least at that time they were doing something they enjoyed, but now they’re in deep weeds trying to finish work they’ve known about for many weeks.
By definition, procrastination is the act or habit of putting off or delaying something, and it is a problem that has been increasing rapidly amongst many in recent years. A common misconception in society today is that procrastination is all in the head, and doesn’t impact a person’s physical health. Procrastinators have a tendency to become depressed and more prone to angry outbursts. Depression and Procrastination, written by Timothy A. Pychyl, says, “...scores on the measure of depression were significantly correlated with scores on the measure of procrastination,” and, “...the more depressed we are, the more we report procrastination, and vice versa.” Not surprisingly, two of the most commonly reported mental health issues are directly related. The more a person procrastinates, the more likely they are to become depressed, because they are struggling to accomplish anything fulfilling. A personal interview with a classmate, Sarah Skilling, also proved this claim.
