Helping the poor is a common practice in most major religions, as they feel it is their duty to do so. This paper will explore how different religions view and deal with poverty on both a national and global level, as well as how these religions classify poverty. Some believe that the way poverty is treated in society propagates the issue, allowing people in modernized countries to subsist on handouts. With almost half of the world living in poverty, that’s surviving on less than $2.50 per day, poverty doesn’t get enough attention.1 Helping those in need has been a practice among religions for centuries, however poverty is still a large issue today that major religions are dealing with.

Early Rabbinic jews were told to help the poor by providing food and shelter, however they made sure to keep themselves above the poor by eating at separate tables. The catholic church is a huge aid to poor countries, helping to provide vaccines, education, clean water and many other needs that developed nations take for granted. Even most of the people in poverty in the United States can read and write because of the education system. The Catholic church’s mission seems to be more centered around the needs of the developing world and less on the local scale. Muslims have the tradition of a waqf, or gift of any type of property to an organization. In the past, waqfs had been used to help the poor by building orphanages, schools and hospitals to better their quality of life. People also do donate to charities outside of organized religion, but churches try to create opportunities, like service trips, to be able to reach out to the community. There are many causes for poverty, such as; disease, poor government systems, no access to clean water or sanitation, and natural disasters. There are many people living in poverty today all across the globe, however it is very concentrated in sub saharan Africa where disease runs rampant and access to clean water is nil. There are many new inventions that could help address some of these issues, new water purification systems, and new vaccines to hopefully bring some of these people out of the cycle of poverty. The underlying causes of poverty need to be addressed before any progress will be made in alleviating poverty. In the meantime, immediate relief efforts and technological advances help keep to these people alive. Hopefully one day the cycle can be
