What Is Polonius Role In Hamlet

If I were to be the director Hamlet, Gertrude, Polonius and the Ghost all would have a certain roles. I would have the room look quite large and elegant. There would be large tapestries on the wall where Polonius could hide behind. The queens original attitude would be quite blunt as Polonius had recommend. When Hamlet begins to speak to his mother and says, “Go, go you question with wicked tongue”(3.5.15) I would have Hamlet look insane and almost ready to grab Gertrude in anger when she questions him. Gertrude reaction to her son’s violent personality would be turned into one of fright. However, even though she may feel threaten she may also be confused as to what Hamlet is talking about; this is seen when she says, “What wilt thou do? …show more content…
Once Polonius is stabbed it would be a very swift death. Hamlet would hear him behind the tapestry and violently try to kill him. Hamlet had previously missed his opportunity in the scene before to kill Claudius and now all of he pure rage was brought out on Polonius. To Hamlet the death of Polonius does not faze him. He is so blinded by revenge he acts as if he has done nothing wrong. He says, “Thou wretched, rash, intruding fool, farewell”(3.4.38) He does not have any regrets about his actions and treats Polonius’s body with great disrespect. This is the beginning of the tragedy because it is the first life Hamlet takes and it isn’t even Claudius. It is an innocent old man and tragically Hamlet’s words have turned into action, but this revenge is only going to bring Hamlet closer to insanity and only bring more death to him. When Polonius dies I think the audience is suppose to feel devastated and surprised. This killing has been done to a man who didn’t deserve it. It makes the audience feel a greater amount anger towards Hamlet and makes you sympathize with Polonius and his family. When existing Hamlet doesn’t even treat Polonius’s body with

These lines demonstrate how Hamlet was trying to act insane in front of Polonius. This evidence affects the plot because if people believe that Hamlet is crazy, no one will take him seriously when he accuses Claudius of murdering the king. People would also pity him and mistreat him because they think he is insane. This is why I sympathize with Hamlet.…

He immediately gets defensive, proclaiming to Gertrude that Polonius was a fool for spying on their conversation and that he got what he deserved. While it can be argued that Hamlet is guiltless over the murder of Polonius, it is more probable that Hamlet only turns to victim blaming because he needs to validate his actions to Gertrude. Gertrude supports this idea in the excerpt because she says that his remorse, along with his madness allow his good aspects to make themselves…

Life is all about choices, therefore choices are easily tied to one’s life experiences. All actions have consequences, and sometimes one’s greatest vice is not listening to the whole precipice (meaning, lesson) in the advice (actions) from others. For example, in the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Polonius gives Laertes various pieces of advice before Laertes departs for France. Many of which are applicable to a multitude of characters throughout the play, and the characters who are not present while the advice is given may have benefitted from the messages that Polonius gives in his speech. However, the characters that are present to hear the advice, Polonius and Laertes, have the great advantage over other characters because they have…

And-would it were not so!-you are my mother.” (3, 4, 16-17) Hamlet is claiming that he is displeased that Gertrude is his mother because she went against her previous husband, Hamlet’s real father. This is also evidence of Claudius’ evil identity because the opportunity to gain and sustain power clouds his mind to the extent where he is comfortable with surrendering the important mother-son relationship. According to Kate Stone Lombardi, “Teenage boys who are close to their moms engage in less risky behavior.” This conflict acts as a catalyst for chaos because Hamlet becomes furious over Gertrude’s quick remarriage, and…

Hamlet originally planned the murder against Claudius, but impulsively executed Polonius first. However, when he realized he had killed Polonius, Hamlet felt no sorrow for his death (despite committing murder in the presence of his mother). “Thou wretched rash, intruding fool. Farewell, I took thee for thy better” acknowledges Hamlet after stabbing Polonius unknowingly behind the curtain. Instead of an ordinary hero seeking justice, Hamlet wanted Claudius suffering for his sins and felt no guilt for Polonius’ death, insulting and blaming him for his death due to his intrusion on Gertrude.…

Shakespeare draws on the stage metaphor, an ancient idea stretching back to the time of Pythagoras, and incorporates this comparison of the real world and the world of theatre into a number of his plays. In Hamlet, he uses the concept of metatheatre to emphasise on the theme as well as to create and use a forceful instrument that forcefully thrusts the current situation into the next set of events. He creates an illusion within an illusion which has a profound impact on reality as the play within the play explores the ideal truth and the moral universe. Andrew Jackson once said, “It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purposes” when William Shakespeare was writing The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, he applied Jackson’s words to his tragedy. Shakespeare made it clear in his writing that he wanted there to be many themes, but the one theme he wanted to stick out the most was the government will selfishly do things even if it does not benefit the people. Shakespeare does this through characters such as Claudius. He also shows through Claudius covering up Polonius’ murder by Hamlet how the government can be corrupt and not care about their people. Shakespeare wanted the world to see, through Fortinbras, if the government…

It suggests that he killed his father so that he could be with his mother which is why he is so mad at Claudius. Hamlet is theorized to be jealous of his uncle and wants him dead so that he can be romantically involved with his own mother. There are scenes such as the Nunnery-scene and the speech that he gave at her grave suggested he was romantically attracted to her, more than the love a son should have for his mother (Bradley). Other scenes, however contradict this theory. Mostly Polonius’ death scene suggests that he is only infuriated with the person who killed his father and his thirst to take revenge against his uncle is due to his broken heartedness from his loss and mother’s ignorance of the situation.…

For any son, the death of one’s father will definitely have a huge impact on their life however it appears that for Hamlet rather than simple grief or remorse, Hamlet instead turns to madness. Hamlet’s psychological development can be analyzed during his soliloquy of Act 2, Scene ii where he decides to plot against Claudius to revenge his father as well as Act 3 Scene IV. After King Hamlet’s death and putting Hamlet in a situation of where he must pretend to be insane, Hamlet’s true sanity can be questioned through his decision making and through the analysis of his pleasure seeking id, his realistic ego, and his over-thinking superego from a psychoanalytical reading of the text. By taking a look through the psychoanalytical lens, it is apparent through Hamlet’s long soliloquy that the death of his father is very much taking a toll on his mind. Upon analyzing the mental state of the struggling prince, one can…

He is similar to Hamlet because eventually, each of them both had one goal which they fixated on with their entire beings. Polonius even put his name before his daughter and son when he forced Ophelia to not socialize with Hamlet because he was a bad influence and when he told Laertes to not act uncouthly in France because it would ruin Polonius’s reputation. Even though, Hamlet and Polonius were similar in terms of having one motive, Hamlet survived longer in the play than Polonius because his resolve was justified.
