What Is Piggy's Glasses Symbolize In Lord Of The Flies

In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a plane with children crashes into an island. The children start to establish their own society and rule themselves. In the real world, it is clearly shown that some will be well-known and strong while some will be weak and being bully. Piggy is the weak one. He is counted as the “unique” one within the boys. In contrast to the others, he is a more fat and quiet boy. However, he gives different impacts in different situations. William Golding emphasizes this by the characters’ comparisons, Piggy’s glasses, and Piggy’s death to demonstrate how Piggy represents the intellectual aspects of civilization in the book. In general, leaders tend to have more self-confidence and better looks than others. Great …show more content…
It is also the symbol of weakness. Piggy's glasses is already part of his identity rather than just a normal glasses. The round thick spectacle frame is without a doubt associated with intelligence as if Piggy spent lots of time reading books (no electronics during WWII). So when his glasses are mentioned, it implies knowledge and practical thought. However, it is an ironic that while his knowledge “benefits” the civilization, the glasses can seen as a weakness too. After one lens of Piggy's glasses broke, “This was too bitter for Piggy, who forgot his timidity in the agony of his loss. He began to cry out, shrilly”(70) it reflects Piggy is actually a “meaningless color”(73). While the glasses benefits the boys and gives Piggy the sight to see, they come to a point that they are too dependent on it. If it’s gone, the boys will not able to survive on the island and Piggy will be useless. Most importantly, the usage of Piggy’s glasses is a “great” discovery by Jack, however the ending of the glasses wasn’t expected. After Jack pointing out using the glasses to create fire, the glasses suddenly become the bond of a civilization. “Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks… ‘One side’s broken’”(71). Suppose the glasses should hold upon a better society between each of them. In contrast the ambitious Jack steals the glasses away from Ralph’s tribe for his own good. The break in the glasses, which cannot be repaired, reflects that the rift between the tribes is slowly manifest. With one side broken from the glasses, it basically shows the breaking of the last hope to humanity that the boys
