A lot of literature uses symbolism to express a deeper meaning of an object, person or place. In William Golding's Novel, Lord of the Flies he uses many things to communicate a greater purpose to simple things. Specifically William Golding uses the beast and Piggy’s glasses to express the destruction of society that takes place on the island. Golding uses The beast as a symbol to show the fear the boys have of being alone, and Piggy’s glasses to represent civilization and how it slowly breaks apart.

The beast is a simply figment of the boys imagination and is a factor of which their society falls apart. At the beginning of the story the boys become scared that there is a so called beast on the island. “You littluns started all this with

Jack breaks their connection to civilization. In chapter 4, Jack slaps Piggy breaking his glasses. This stops Piggy from being able to see and the boys have now destroyed their theoretical connection to society and the beginning of when they become savages. Later on in the novel after the tribe formed they realized they need something to to make fire. “He was a chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear from his left hand dangled Piggy’s glasses” (Chapter 10). Symbolism of Savagery and Civilization in Lord of the Flies The use of symbols and imagery in literature allows the audience to engage themselves in the novel. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies portrays the diverse aspects of humanity through detailed symbols. Piggy’s glasses are significance of hope and intelligence through the growth of humanity. In the novel Jack states,”Piggy specs, if the fire’s all out we’ll need them,”(Golding 76).This shows how Piggy’s glasses are a useful tool for the boys and without Piggy’s intelligence the boys wouldn't have survived on the island. Also the fact, Piggy’s glasses are used as a positive attribute, however at the same time are used as a negative attribute of destroying humanity. As the boys change, the glasses are becoming misused,”Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head,”Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rock,”(Golding 71).The boy misuse the glasses by fighting over it to make fire and picking on piggy because Ralph always defend…

The boys stranded on the island create and become obsessed with a fictitious beast, despite being alone on the island with only pigs. When the first littlun suggests that there is a beastie, the biguns try to dismiss the thought from everyone’s minds and stop the spread of fear through their band saying, “I tell you there isn't a beast!"” (Golding 29). As time goes on, however, the children become increasingly terrified of the mythical beast, creating theories and leaving a pig’s head on a stick as a offering. “Simon tries to suggest that the only beast on the island is in themselves; however, no one listens” (Telgen).…

Piggy’s glasses are a representation of knowledge and innovation. The reason why Piggy is rejected from the tribe is because humans fear what they do not know, and Piggy holds many of these answers. Piggy’s glasses help light the fire, the first major advancement the boys have made since their landing on the island. The glasses breaking represent how little the boys value intellectualism. Piggy’s knowledge is his main asset, which is why he is seen as invaluable by the rest of the tribe.…

William Golding uses his novel, Lord of the Flies, to show his point of view on basic social structure and behaviors. Golding does this by having the boys act and talk in the way he perceives society to be. In chapter one, Jack says that "we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything" (Golding, William 42) which reveals one of The authors points. In the novel, Golding makes the boys start out how society expects British boys to act and turns them into savages of nature along with showing how social structure and expectations changes people and how they are affected without society.…

This is the first time that Jack had actually physically harmed one of the other boys, and thus it is a clear sign of the changing society and a large step towards total savagery. Finally at the end of the book, Jack has developed a completely primitive and savage mindset, to a point where he attempts to kill Ralph.…
