What Is Peaceful Resistance

Peaceful resistance to the law positively impacts a free society because with this the country and world get to hear the opinions of the people. This includes the voice, ideas, and thoughts. Therefore it helps people in need without harming those who aren’t in need. How else would the government or society know if others agree or disagree with the choices or decisions made? Now, does it make a difference whether it’s a peaceful resistance or not? Yes, it does. What is peaceful resistance and how does it affect society? As a U.S citizen you have a right to speak and protest about anything the government says or does. “Abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." (Freedom) If, for example, there’s a student bullying another student, it is your human right to say something to that bully to make them stop or say something to that student to build them back up. With them, came a positive outcome. However, not all protests are peaceful and leave a positive outcome. Violent protests are disruptive, harmful, and could contain dreadful outcomes. The people of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are protesting against police brutality and the treatment of people of color as well. “The shooting triggered unrest in the city’s north side Saturday night as protesters torched businesses and threw rocks at officers. Four officers were injured…" (Barrett) Officers were injured and, people were arrested that night. This didn’t affect or end police brutality. The people could have been more understanding, and humane by continuing to show respect by following the laws, and supporting the families who’ve lost loved ones. They also could have used a more peaceful resistance instead of harming those around
