Obesity is currently a worldwide epidemic. The public health crisis is associated with "over twenty different diseases and conditions including high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, deep vein blood clots, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gallstone disease, arthritis, colon cancer, breathing problems, and depression." However, being overweight and leading an inactive lifestyle are now a normal occurrence in American Society. Lack of awareness and advertising aid in this social norm by encouraging overconsumption of foods full of salt, sugar, and fat. While eating is a necessity of life it can also be a deadly addiction.

Bariatric surgeries prove to be the most successful treatment in lowering the mortality rate among overweight individuals. Most forms of this surgery decrease the size of the stomach so a patient cannot eat large amounts of food. After a surgery a patient can lose anywhere from 50 to 80 percent excess weight. Which significantly decreases the risk of all related conditions. Though, bariatric surgeries can reduce mortality from related diseases there are still risks. The risk of excessive bleeding, allergic reactions, and infections are still a factor. Also, the lifestyle change is drastic and can include vomiting, intolerance to fatty foods, lactose intolerance, and diarrhea if dietary changes are not
